Paris Hilton is significantly smarter than she lets on. In between her reality TV shows, a drink driving volation and that infamous sex tape, she gives the impression of not being all there - and you'd not be the first to assume that she's just another ditzy blonde.

But she's done remarkably well. Consider this - Paris doesn't have to make any money at all. Her job description as Heiress basically ensures that she's set for life, and her dad's chain of hotels would keep her in big glasses and tiny dogs as long as she wanted.

But in 2005, she raked in $7 million on her own - and by the looks of it, she didn't have to work too hard to get it, either. She's clearly not just a pretty face, even if a lot of her fame rests on convincing us all that she is.

As well as trying to find a series of best friends through a bunch of reality shows (a process which we can't entirely endorse, but you can't fault her for attempting to use the scientific method in what is normally such a haphazard affair) she's tried her hand at acting, too - most notably the 2005 slash-em-up House of Wax but also putting in an actually-remarkably-good performance in Repo! The Genetic Opera as the psychotic Amber Sweet.

And through all of her bad behaviour and apparent air-headedness, she remains unapologetic, which we entirely respect. She's incredibly divisive and made a career out of being someone that people love to hate - a bit like Jeremy Kyle. But better-looking, obviously.

Miss Teen World Amy Jackson is making her Kollywood debut in Arya's upcoming Madrasapattinam, a period love story set in pre-Independence era! Then I began looking for a heroine, I happened to see Amy's picture in the Miss Teen World pageant on the Internet. The moment I saw her picture, I knew that she was the person I was looking for. My only concern was whether she would agree to be a part of this project.

We searched all of England for her. In fact, my line producer in England, David Choudhary, after being unable to trace Amy, sent me pictures of 100 other girls to choose from. I told him don't mind looking at the pictures but I want Amy as my film heroine. Finally, we decided to have auditions in London and as luck would have it, Amy walked in on the third day. That was how she came to be part of Madrasapattinam, said Vijay, director of the film.

We always wanted to travel to India. Acting is one of my passions and this film appeared to be the perfect opportunity. When I went for the casting, I wasn't sure if I'll do the movie. But once I heard the storyline and met the director, I was sure I wanted to be part of it. Everyone made me feel welcome, not like how it is in England. I was able to relate with Vijay and we decided that it would be a good move for me to make, Amy said to a leading English daily.

I didn't know what to expect. However, it was a fantastic opportunity and Arya and Alex really helped me settle down. My character is Amy Wilkinson, the 18-year-old daughter of the governor of Madrasapattinam. A problem arises when I fall in love with an Indian boy as it was forbidden back then. My character is that of a kind, genuine person who loves Indians unlike her father and stepmother, she added.

Madrasapattinam is the revolutionary love story (of a Madrasi and a British girl) set in the pre-Independence era. Vijay, who directed Kireedam (Ajith) and Poi Solla Porom will direct this beautiful love story. Nirav Shah is the cinematographer and G.V. Prakash is the music composer. Vijay has elaborate plans to recreate the aura of the British era in India. Kalpathi Agoram, who gave the recent blockbuster Subramaniapuram, produces Madrasapattinam.

We're not massive fans of the VGAs, even though we love games. Problem is that the event is riddled with overblown flash in a tremendously American way – if it was the Brits hosting it, no doubt we'd have tea and crumpets and then a butler would arrive and announce the names of the nominees as they walked in, a bit like the ballroom scene in My Fair Lady but with less Audrey Hepburn. It boils down to three big problems:

1 ) They have an award for “most anticipated game.” What kind of bullshit is that? Should they really be congratulating a game's PR crew for hyping up their game to ridiculous lengths by offering them more hype?

2)As gaming doesn't really have celebrities to hand out the awards, they draft in famous people from other walks of life – like Charlie Sheen, Will.i.am and a variety of other folk – who say something unexciting about games and then move on their way, pocketing their appearance fee.

3 )The event is punctuated with exclusive first looks at trailers for new games, which is nice and all, but really waters down the importance of those awards and highlights how much of a marketing stunt the whole affair is.

Basically they're NOT GREAT. But you know who is great? Felicia Day. Much like our current cover star and all round geek Goddess Olivia Munn, she's a massive nerd BUT unlike most massive nerds who live in basements and eat nothing but Cheetos, she's pretty cute. And she's written and starred in her own sitcom (which was about games, natch, which makes her an excellent host), which is more than we've ever done.

She's pretty much the only decent thing about the awards - so next year, can't we do away with all the trailers and the celebrities and big entrances, and just have Felicia Day sitting quietly in a nice room (there'd be an open fireplace, and she could be wearing a lovely jumper perhaps) and she'd go through the nominations in a gentle voice and we wouldn't have to put up with the cavalcade of nonsense they serve up every year.

You know what? We're being too negative. We're sorry. We're glad that games are being recognised by the mainstream as the HUGE industry that they are, just... maybe not like this, eh?

Sky Sports presenter Georgie Thompson was reportedly arrested for drink driving last weekend.

The 33-year-old was breathalysed by police as she returned to her home in Chelsea, London. She was found to be over the limit and arrested.

"Georgie is utterly devastated as you can imagine. She held her hands up immediately," a source told the paper. "She'd been at a friend's house for lunch and had had a few drinks early on.

"Georgie stopped drinking after a while and when it was time to go home she figured she would be okay. She was not staggering around drunk or anything. If she thought she was drunk she would not have driven."

Thompson, who has worked for Sky Sports News since 2001, was said to be worried about the reaction of her bosses, who she informed of the incident shortly after her release.

The Sky1 A League Of Their Own team captain split from boyfriend Declan Donnelly earlier this year. Speaking in June, she admitted that it was tough to go through a "painful break-up when you're in the public eye".

A spokesperson for Thompson, who will appear in court next month, said: "We can confirm she was pulled over for being over the limit at the weekend."

Vanessa Bryant also remained quiet despite reports that Bryant had multiple other extra-marital affairs.

The couple is seeking joint custody of their daughters, Natalia, 8, and Gianna, 5. They have no prenuptial agreement, according to the L.A. Times.

Vanessa Bryant’s in good company. Eva Longoria divorced San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker last year after reportedly learning that he was cheating on her with his teammate’s wife. Earlier in 2010, Shaquille O’Neal and ex-wife Shaunie O’Neal reached a settlement in their divorce. (In 2008, O’Neal infamously rapped that Bryant, his rival, had ruined his marriage, rhyming, “I’m a horse, Kobe ratted me out, that’s why I’m getting divorced.”)

Some years ago, rather more than 15, a friend and I decided to install, among the New York social curriculum, a series of surprise-guest lunch parties; the idea seemed amusing enough for February, the dreariest month in New York, so my friend and I invited four other friends to join us for lunch at a private apartment. The idea was that the six of us would, individually, supply an additional guest, a “mystery” guest – preferably someone interesting and well-known and yet not known personally to any or at least all of us. My choice was Dr J Robert Oppenheimer, but he wasn’t available that day; now I can’t remember who I brought.

But I do remember the selection made by Lady Keith, who was then Mrs Leland Hayward. Lady Keith, whom her friends call Slim, is a tall, coltish, California-bred aristocrat (northern California, need one add) with the most beautiful legs, ankles and feet extant. Her “surprise”, Elizabeth Taylor, was rather a runt by comparison – like Mrs Onassis, her legs are too short for the torso, the head too bulky for the figure in toto; but the face, with those lilac eyes, is a prisoner’s dream, a secretary’s self-fantasy; unreal, non-obtainable, at the same time shy, overly vulnerable, very human, with the flicker of suspicion constantly flaring behind the lilac eyes.

We had met once before – one summer afternoon on the farm of a mutual friend in Connecticut. At the time, her third husband, the tough and short and sexy Mike Todd, still had his plane crash ahead of him, was still alive and married to this beautiful child who seemed besotted by him.

Often, when couples make oozing displays of themselves, always kissing, gripping, groping – well, often one imagines their romance must be in serious difficulties. Not so with these two. I remember them, that afternoon, sprawled in the sun in a field of grass and daisies holding hands and kissing while a litter of six or eight fat Newfoundland puppies tumbled over their stomachs, tangled in their hair.

But it was not until I encountered her as Slim Hayward’s guest that Elizabeth Taylor made an impression on me, at least as a person; as an actress I’d always liked her – from National Velvet straight on, but especially as the rich girl in A Place in the Sun.

A lot of people take great pleasure in hating Taylor Momsen. You can certainly see why she might make her contemporaries jealous. Momsen, aged 17, has already clocked up nine film roles, including Spy Kids 2 and The Grinch, signed to mega modelling agency IMG, and become a teen heroine thanks to her role as Jenny Humphrey, the arty outsider turned snobby superbitch in the TV show Gossip Girl. She is also the face of Material Girl, Madonna's daughter's clothing range. Not bad for someone who has a fondness for saying things like: "I fucked a priest once – just kidding."

So perhaps we shouldn't be surprised to learn that Momsen's taking a break from Gossip Girl to focus on her band: a grungy outfit called the Pretty Reckless. They played New York nightclub Don Hill's the night before our interview, and made for a slightly discomfiting spectacle. Momsen – slender, heavily made up, wearing stockings and a suggestion of a skirt – was flanked by three hairy rockers who looked about twice her age. This rock chick in stripper heels was a long, long, way from Cindy Lou Who, the cutesy character she played in The Grinch 10 years ago.

Momsen sang well but, for all her songs' "rawk" angst, proved a strangely inanimate performer. The crowd's awkwardness only worsened when, mid-song, Momsen pulled down her top to reveal gaffer-taped nipples.

Still, as I wait for Momsen in a Manhattan diner, the image that haunts me is not this on-stage flashing, but her appearance, earlier this year, on ITV's This Morning, meeting Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby's softly-softly enquiries with dead-eyed scorn. There's a hilarious bite-your-fist moment when Schofield hastily apologises to camera after she says: "[I] just don't give a shit." Apparently, she had food poisoning, but you get the impression that cosying up to daytime TV personalities isn't high on her list of priorities, whatever her health.

So it's a nice surprise when she slips into the seat opposite me with a cheery: "How are ya?" Even in swathes of maroon eyeshadow and lipstick, she's incredibly pretty – and surprisingly twitchy, plucking at the sleeve of her over-sized T-shirt, gulping her coffee and letting out a nervous laugh.

Momsen, who was born in Missouri, has been in "this business" her whole life. Her first job, at the age of three, was in a Shake'n'Bake commercial, but she's keen to stress that music has always been her main interest. "Everything else I've just sort of done," she says. "It's not that I don't like it, it's just not me." She grew up listening to her dad's Beatles records, but freely admits that, since then, her listening hasn't strayed far from classic rock. Of contemporary music, she says: "It's a very pop-orientated market. There's no real kind of rock'n'roll, there just isn't. So – get angry kids! Listen to the Pretty Reckless!" British fans will get the chance when the UK tour kicks off next week.

Momsen shows me a picture on her BlackBerry of Madonna photographing her for the Material Girl range: "I was, like, 'Well, this is cool.'" Do her friends ever get jealous of her fame? "Well," she says slowly. "I don't really have many friends. I never have. I was always a loner. I was in and out of school so much – so, I dunno, I'm really shy. Which is weird because you probably wouldn't think that. I've got my, like, six best friends, and three of them are on tour with me the whole time so that's awesome. It's not sad or anything for me. I like it."

A cool head for Tampon-gate

As for fame, she says, "it just kind of happens overnight. No one prepares you for that. On Gossip Girl, I was just going to work, doing what I've always done, and then all of a sudden you're like, 'Woah!' But you get used to it. You ignore it – because whatever people say about me doesn't bother me at all."

Really? Yes, she insists. "If you're in high school, or at college, or at work, someone's not going to like you. It's inevitable." And this, she says, is multiplied if you're famous. "But it doesn't mean anything. And when people say, 'Do you care what people say?' I'm like, 'My goddamn tampon string's on the internet – do you think I care about anything?'" She's referring to a photograph taken of her while on stage this summer that ended up all over the web. "It's fucking douchey," she says. "I saw him as well. My dress isn't that short – it's not like you can see my fucking vagina – and the guy gets down on his knees and shoots up my skirt."

Can you think of any other 17-year-old-girl reacting with such resilience to such a thing? When I tell her I'm impressed, she says: "Well, would I want a picture of my tampon string? Nnnnnnnyo. I'd probably say no if I had an option. But, y'know, what you gonna do? It's there."

But don't you take pleasure in being shocking? "Honestly, no. I'm trying not to be shocking." I squeal in protest, mentioning the previous night's onstage flashing incident. "Yeah, because it's in the video! It's an imitation. Doesn't everyone do that? Doesn't everyone recreate their video on stage? I'm serious! And I didn't flash my boobs. I had tape on them. It was a spontaneous thing – there was some tape in the dressing room, and I'd been wanting to do that for a while. "

The video in question – for the single Make Me Wanna Die, which was used in the recent movie Kick-Ass – features Momsen stripping in a graveyard as she walks towards the camera. "It was held up in legal for a long time because I was 16 when we shot that," she chuckles. "We couldn't release it because, yes, I actually got naked."

She rationalises the nudity thus: "It's such a complex song – and the video really reflects the song, in the way that I'd die for this person. And the point is: if you don't do something that's making you happy, you're just working through possessions and shit; you're dying with nothing anyway. So I'm stripping off my worldly possessions and giving them away. And then there's hell raining down, just cause it looks cool."

As Momsen warms to the theme of female sexuality, she starts to sound weirdly ahead of her years. "I'm a promoter of masturbation," she says loudly, making our fellow diners pretend they haven't heard. "Don't sleep around – learn yourself first! Guys do, but girls don't. And that's why girls have so many bad experiences. But you can know your body, know yourself, know what feels good. You don't have to give yourself away just to have sexual relevance. Because I don't think sex is something people should be afraid of. It's part of human nature, so I don't think it should be so shameful – particularly for girls and young girls."

When she moves onto the subject of her last birthday, she begins to sounds more like the teenager she is, gabbling excitedly: "We had cake, although I don't like cake. I like brownies. But actual cake? I dunno. Something about it, too cliche. I was in Paris and they do shots of espresso over ice cream. Oh my god, that was my favourite thing ever."

Momsen was 15 when she joined Gossip Girl. Does she feel older and wiser at 17? "You get more insight as you get older, on everything. I kind of woke up one morning and I was like, 'Oh, I see what's happening, I get everything.'"

Then she stops abruptly. So what is it she gets exactly? "Well, I kind of woke up and was like, 'Oh, I get it, I'm a product.'" Which might be the saddest words ever to pass a 17-year-old girl's lips. But, with typical Momsen nonchalance, they're delivered with a shrug.

Mexican actress Salma Hayek said in an interview on BBC’s “The Graham Norton Show” that she wasn’t always as vivacious and self-confident as she is today, The Daily Mail UK reports. The “Puss in Boots” star says she was so desperate that she even asked Jesus Christ for his help.

“I went to a church that had a saint that was supposed to do a lot of miracles,” Hayek said. “I put my hands in the holy water and went: Please Jesus give me some boobs."

Hayek, 45, adds that she was “really scared” because she was “the youngest in class and all these girls were starting to get them (breasts.)”

Hayek got what she wanted and a little more for good luck.

“I was getting teased a lot because everyone was older and I was the skinny tomboy,” Hayek continued. She also mentioned that speaking English was a big challenge when she first arrived to the US.”

While seductively posing for V Magazine Spain last year, Hayek revealed her humble beginnings, her undocumented immigrant status early on and the hardships she faced in Hollywood.

“I was an illegal immigrant in the United States,” Hayek said during the interview. “It was for a small period of time, but I still did it.”

“I had to endure the worst time of all in terms of racial discrimination in Hollywood when I first started out,” Hayek said in the interview.

“It was inconceivable to American directors and producers that a Mexican woman could have a lead role.”

This year’s last total lunar eclipse on Saturday presented a celestial spectacle for people all over the country, including those in the national capital, in the pre-dusk hours.

In a clear sky over the national capital, the full moon slowly slipped into the earth’s darker shadow starting just after 5.02 PM.

“The lunar eclipse started at 5:02 PM and could be seen with naked eyes,” Director of Nehru Planetarium, N Rathnasree said.

Astronomy enthusiasts and sky-gazers gathered at the Nehru Planetarium and India Gate to watch the moon’s bright white glow giving way to a cerise red.

Amateur Astronomers Association, in association with the Nehru Planetarium, had set up telescopes and cameras to enable people watch and take photographs of the celestial phenomenon.

“It was a memorable experience. I saw the moon slipping into the darker shadow,” Shreyansh, a school student, said.

The maximum eclipse was seen at 20:01:50 PM IST.

The eclipse began at 5.02 PM and will end at 11.02 PM.

While the noticeable Umbra phase began at 6.15 PM, it will end at 9.48 PM.

The sunlight passing through the Earth’s atmosphere gave the lunar surface a deep reddish hue.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth in course of its orbit around the sun, comes between the moon and sun in such a way that moon is hidden in the shadow cast by earth.

This can occur only when the sun, earth and moon are aligned in a straight line, C. B. Devgun of Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) said.

People living in eastern Africa, the Middle East, central Asia and western Australia will also able to watch the entire eclipse, from beginning to end, Arvind Paranjpye, scientific officer of Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, said.
